University of Johannesburg forks out R15 million for private security

The University of Johannesburg has spent up to R15 million on private security benefits over its four grounds since the Fees Must Fall dissents began in October a year ago.

Bad habit Chancellor Ihron Rensburg said they had gotten privately owned business Fidelity to subdue the occasionally sporadic dissents by understudies requesting free tertiary instruction.

The college was working with three units of security faculty – relying upon the level of hazard.

"We have 200 UJ staff, another 400 that were outsourced – given by Fidelity – however will be insourced from the first of October. The third part is the group controllers, or what the understudies call bouncers, likewise acquired by Fidelity," Rensburg said.

Up to 50 "swarm controllers" were acquired when the level of hazard was characterized as high, he said.

The college has been on high ready this week, following dissents that saw a few understudies endeavor to intrude on addresses and involve libraries.

"The 400 are not your hardcore group controllers; they are regularly there to watch and report and control access at the door, so they have a lighter part to play. Colleges are not in the matter of group control. This is the reason this third unit; we needed to get individuals who are supposedly capable in swarm control circumstance."

Be that as it may, the privately owned business Fidelity has gone under wild feedback after a few columnists and understudies were pepper splashed, and some beaten, outside UJ's Doornfontein Campus by their watchmen.

Conciliatory sentiment to understudies and columnists

There were two separate examples where private security protects were recorded physically attacking understudies on and off grounds following seven days of dissents.

Rensburg has apologized to understudies and columnists, saying the episodes were unfortunate. He said the college was conversing with Fidelity to comprehend what had happened.

"It is an unequivocal statement of regret to the columnists, and clearly understudies also, and obviously the spectators. I addressed a portion of the columnists – who were still extremely steamed, naturally so – and am staggered at what happened.

"I am similarly staggered and baffled that despite deliberately spread out plans and assentions, that things can go amiss so rapidly. In this way, from our perspective, it is my earnest expression of remorse and lament."

Van Rensburg said they expected to reinforce security to ensure 99% of the understudies proceeding with scholastic action.

Strain has elevated at different colleges since Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande declared that poor understudies would not be slapped with a charge increment but rather suggested a 8% expansion for understudies whose guardians earned more than R600 000 for every annum.
